Why Heat Pumps Are an Eco-Friendly Choice

Maybe your current air conditioner is shiny and new. It could even have all the bells and whistles a homeowner could want — programmable thermostat, remote monitoring, variable speed compressor, and more. No matter what, though, it’s simply not going to be as efficient as a heat pump system.

That might sound like a bold claim, but it’s also true. If you want to spend less money heating and cooling your home while also putting out fewer greenhouse gases, you should consider changing to a heat pump.

What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an all-in-one solution. Traditional heating sources, like air conditioners and furnaces, require two pieces of equipment, one for heating and another one for cooling.

In contrast, heat pumps use outdoor and indoor units connected by refrigerant lines so they can transfer heat from one location to the other. They use the same principles as an air conditioner but split the parts of an air conditioner in two. The indoor unit pulls heat past a refrigerant coil, which absorbs the heat and transfers it to the outdoor unit.

When a homeowner wants to raise the temperature inside the house, the system runs in reverse, transferring heat from the outside to the inside unit. It all has to do with the pressure of the refrigerant. The system constantly regulates the pressure to provide a specific amount of heat absorption.

How Are Heat Pumps More Efficient?

If the process just splits an AC unit into two parts, why is it so much more efficient? The biggest reason is that heat pumps transfer heat rather than create it. By using refrigerant to pass heat from one location to another, the system doesn’t have to burn fuel or use huge amounts of electricity to heat a coil.

The unit begins by transferring heat and reaching the desired indoor air temperature. Once that’s done, it can then disperse the conditioned air through ducts or directly from the indoor air handler.

How Do Heat Pumps Help the Environment?

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), heat pumps can lower greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20% over traditional systems. The savings increase when the electricity to power them comes from clean sources. Heating takes up about half the planet’s energy usage. Simply switching to a heat pump can really reduce emissions.

There are secondary benefits as well. For example, heat pumps have fewer moving parts, which means they require much less maintenance and can last longer than traditional systems — 20 years or more with proper care. Given that longevity and the lower energy usage, you can save quite a bit of money with a heat pump.
